First off, let me introduce my cases. Once or twice a week (or, more likely, when I feel like it) I'll be writing an "article" defending one of my beliefs. Political or religious. "Article" has quotation marks around it because I really just have no idea what to call it. Titles are a spin off of the Case for Christ and Case for Faith books. Which I should have read but didn't.
So... lets start this.
Abortion is something I feel incredibly strong about. Prepare for babbling. Let’s start with some statistics.
-49, 551, 703 babies have been aborted since 1973
-About 80% by unmarried women
-The majority are under 25 years of age
-47% of women who have had abortions have had a previous abortion
-¾ of women have them because the baby would interfere with work, school, or other responsibilities, ¾ say they can’t afford a child, ½ say they don’t want to be a single parent or are having trouble with their husband/partner. Please note that I did not mention rape. This is because abortions because of rape are VERY rare. I’ll say more about that later.
-40% of minors who have had an abortion say that their parents were not informed
Okay, I think that’s enough. If I were to put all of the statistics, this would be ridiculously long. Now, before everyone grabs their torches and pitchforks and starts running after me screaming “How DARE you not support a woman’s right to choose! You heartless *****!” please know that, first of all, I don’t care what you think about my views. I’m going to say that right away. You could call me any name in the book, you could threaten me, you can do whatever. I’ve heard it all. (Debate forums are fun.) Secondly, this isn’t a women’s rights issue. This is a human rights issue. I’m fighting for the baby. I don’t think it’s the mom’s right, I don’t think it’s the dad’s right, I don’t think it’s ANYONE’S right. I will also say that I don’t judge people who have had them. I don’t hate them or call them murderers. I DO, though, think that abortion is murder. I have to put this little (not so little) disclaimer before all this because people are very quick to yell “Misogyny! Judgmental!” without hearing my side first.
Let’s take a look at all of the reasons people have for keeping abortion legal:
Women’s rights: All I have to say about this is that there’s no reason a woman should have the right to kill her baby. I hear “It’s my body, I should be able to choose” all the time. Well, here’s a newsflash: They aren’t killing YOUR body. The issue isn’t over YOUR body. The issue is with the little baby inside you. I’m for women’s rights, like voting, equal pay, stuff like that. But this is not an equality issue. Men can’t have abortions. Granted, they can’t get preggo either. But just because one half can’t produce life doesn’t mean it’s okay for another person to destroy life. There’s a difference between creation and destruction.
Can’t afford the baby, can’t take care of a baby, don’t want the baby, so on:Adoption. Do it.
Rape/Incest: This is where I can actually see the other side. Nobody wants to say to a women, after she’s been through something horrible, that she has to carry a rapists child for nine months. But here’s the point: Abortions caused by rape/incest are INCREDIBLY rare. Rape is most often too violent to cause pregnancy. They account for about 1%. That means about 495,517 in the last 36 years. It’s still a large number, but listen to what I have to say: We cannot allow almost fifty million babies to die because of it. I know some people are starting to scream “Heartless!” now, but let me finish. Instead of allowing abortions to help these women, we need to protect them from rape. What has been contributing to rape? People are being oversexed. Sex is everywhere! On TV, in movies, in books, in our schools (and I’m not just talking about a sex ed class). If men are this sexed up, and can’t get a partner, chances are higher that they’ll stalk out a defenseless looking woman, and take advantage of her. Ironic how liberals, who are against rape (uh… and conservatives aren't?), and in favor of abortion, supported the “sexual revolution.” (Another reason I’m not a fan of modern day Feminism, they’re big on that, too.) Another contribution: Drugs. Drugs an alcohol are a factor in about 70% of rape. Oh yeah, liberals want less strict drug laws, too. Oh, another thing! Let’s use the money that can be saved by illegalizing abortion to make the streets safer! And how about we provide girls with a safer environment, so if they are having problems with a person they won’t feel so afraid to ask for help! There are so many ways to fix this! But liberals are against almost all of them! So no. I don’t think abortion should be legal because of rape and incest. I don’t think rape should even be a problem.
Downs syndrom, and other issues with the baby: That baby is not less because of his condition. I consider these babies on the exact same level as any other baby.
Illegalizing abortion is making something against the law just because of some people’s emotions or religion: Is it so hard for people to understand that some people just VALUE LIFE? Really? I suppose that’s an emotion. I guess. Not really. Everybody values life to some extent. Unless they have problems, that is. But I don’t think the pro-choice movement wants to be compared to crazy serial killers or anything, so I’m going to assume they value life to an extent too. The thing is, if we had some way to prove that a fetus is a life, then we wouldn’t have an issue. Sure, there would still be some people that support it, but the baby would be protected by the Constitution. It doesn’t matter what they support. But for now, there’s no way to prove that. I mean, there’s a way to prove that the baby’s heart is beating. That they can feel pain. But everyone disagrees on what life is. Does life start at conception? That’s what logic says, if you ask me. Here are some other theories: When he heart starts beating. (40 days after conception. Many women are just finding out they’re preggy by this point.) 3 months. (View taken from St. Augustine.) When they take their first breath. (So you can abort the baby anytime, even as it’s being born.) Now, do I oppose abortion for emotional reasons? Yes. I just about cried when I read this, which is reffering to John Edward's apparent ability to channel unborn babies (yeah, I know, he's a freak):
“Is Edwards able to channel any children right before an abortionist’s fork is plunged into their tiny skulls? Why can’t he hear those babies saying, ’Let me live! Stop spraying this saline solution all over me!’ Edwards must experience interference in channeling the voices of babies about to be aborted, Their liberal mothers’ hands seem to muffle those voices.”
-Ann Coulter, How to Talk to a LiberalDo I oppose abortion for religious reasons?
It is I who bring both life and death. - Deuteronomy 32:39
You formed my inmost being;
You knit me in my mother’s womb.
I praise you, so wonderful you made me;
Wonderful are your works!
My very self you knew;
Where not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
Fashioned in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes foresaw my actions;
In your book all are written down;
My days were shaped, before one came to be.
-Psalms 139: 13-16
Yahweh called me when I was in the womb, before my birth He had pronounced my name.
-Isaiah 49:1
Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.
-Jeremiah 1:5There’s more, but I need to move on. If you want other’s, ask me. I guess I’m going to have to discuss the religious aspect of it sooner or later, so I’ll do it now. The Bible mentions multiple times that God knew us before we were even in the womb. He has a plan for us. I hear the “If God wanted the baby to live He’d have saved it from the abortion, or He would have given the baby to someone else” excuse constantly. You know, I can easily say that if God didn’t want the baby to live, He never would have put it in a mommy’s tummy in the first place. Anyway, God doesn’t use sin. Sin happens because we chose it. God has one plan, but He doesn’t force us to stick to it. We can go His way, the right way, or we can go our way, the wrong way. Saying that God would stop something from happening if He didn’t want it doesn’t make sense. And what happened to standing up for those who can’t stand up for themselves? An unborn baby with no voice definitely fits in that category.
Now that I’ve admitted to the sin of opposing something because of emotion and religion, I can get on to the one thing that is even more confusing to liberals: Common sense. (Joke. Chill.) I think a life is a life. We have no right to take the life of another. Their life is protected by the Constitution. Just because I oppose it for two despicable reasons (have you noticed yet that I use a lot of sarcasm?) doesn’t mean that I don’t have a valid, fact based reason. (Fact as in: something almost everyone agrees is a fact. I think the Bible is factual, but others don’t.) I can tell you now that before I was a serious Christian, I was pro-life. Don’t shove my faith in my face as a reason I can’t be taken seriously.
Now, I’m sure anyone reading this is wondering when this nightmare of an “article” is going to end. Well, no fear, my friends. (Or enemies.) The end is near. First, here‘s a list of the different kinds of abortion. I want to cover all my bases:
Medical: There are two kinds of medical abortions, Methotrexate abortion and Mifepristone abortion. These are performed by taking pills that cause you to miscarry. You can get these until you’re 8-9 weeks pregnant. The first pills that are taken kill the baby, the rest cause the mother to have contractions and push out the tissue.
Surgical abortion
Manual Vacuum Aspiration: This is basically where the doctor inserts a straw-like tube through the mother’s cervix. There’s a syringe at the end, and the doctor uses it to suck out all the tissue in the mother’s womb. This abortion is only used until the mother is 6-7 weeks pregnant.
Machine Vacuum Aspiration: Same as MVA, but with a mechanical pump. 6-12 weeks.
Dilation and Curettage: The mother’s cervix is slowly opened, and the doctor dislodges the placenta and other tissues. 6-12 weeks.
Dilation and Extraction: Mother’s cervix is dilated. The doctor cuts up the fetus, or collapses his head.
Partial-Birth abortion: The doctor grabs the baby’s legs with forceps, and turns him around so he comes out feet first. The doctor delivers the baby’s entire body, except for the head. The doctor uses scissors to make a hole in the baby's skull, and the brains are sucked out, which causes the baby‘s skull to collapse.
Post-Birth abortion, a.k.a. Infanticide: A baby is born, then killed. Barack Obama voted against a bill that protected the lives of babies born of botched abortions when it was still legal to kill them in Illinois. If an abortion was unsuccessful, they put babies on shelves, and waited for them to die. Then they were disposed of. This is legal in the Netherlands right now.
Okay, the last two up there just make me sick. I mean, it all makes me sick, but I don’t understand how someone can possibly kill a fully developed baby. A baby that has already been BORN. Babies can feel pain at least by 19 weeks, and a less developed fetus can feel more pain than a fully developed baby.
I have nothing more to say, except that where as obviously I oppose abortion, I oppose partial-birth abortion, post-birth abortion (heck, most liberals do too), and abortion on demand more than anything. This country is already on it’s way downhill, and it’s starting to look less and less like the land I love. Life is more important than money, sex, and whether you can do whatever you want whenever you want. We need to preserve it, and remember that it is a precious thing.
